Presentation of the gallery
Founded in 1986 by Michèle Aittouarès, galerie BA - Berthet-Aittouarès has become a benchmark on the Parisian Left Bank. In 2000, Michèle was joined by her daughter Odile Aittouarès, art historian and author of the Othon Friesz catalog raisonné, also co-founder of Photo Saint-Germain and Jeudi des Beaux-Arts. Their collaboration began with the exhibition Chine-Occident, featuring major figures of post-war abstraction such as Zao Wou-Ki, Mark Tobey, Jean Degottex, Henri Michaux and Shan Sa.
Specializing in modern art, they have championed the masters of 1950s informal art from the outset: Degottex, Hartung, Marfaing, Tal Coat, Michaux, as well as digital art pioneer Vera Molnar and photographer Mario Giacomelli. The gallery also accompanies the contemporary scene, presenting Etienne Viard, Antoine Schneck, Yann Bagot and Nil Yalter, Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale 2024, affirming a constant dialogue between eras and practices.
Located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the gallery occupies two spaces: 29 rue de Seine and 2 rue des Beaux-Arts, in Pierre Loeb's former premises.
Présentation de l'artiste en focus
Galerie BA - Berthet Aittouarès presents a focus on the work of Yann Bagot, whose work has been transcribing natural landscapes for several years. During numerous residencies (in Senegal or aboard Agnès b.'s Géolette Tara), Yann Bagot has confronted the natural landscapes he has experienced, using ink and seawater as his only instruments, and experimenting with them in a multitude of ways. Water, subject, medium and source of inspiration, runs through all his work: tides, flows, spray and run-off become the vectors of a sensitive quest for drawing. Using ink and paper, sometimes submerged or subjected to the elements, Yann Bagot captures the impermanence and poetic power of living things.
