12 rue Sainte-Marie, 97400 Saint-Denis, Reunion Island
The gallery
Located in Saint-Denis de La Réunion, 12 La Galerie is more than just an exhibition space.
Founded by the Constellation association in 2021, it is the result of a long-standing ambition, driven by one observation: the lack of spaces dedicated to contemporary art on the island.
After eight years of itinerant and ephemeral exhibitions in the public space, the association has finally found a venue that enables it to develop its project: to offer a distribution space for Reunionese artists and democratize contemporary art.
> We produce 4 original exhibitions a year, paying particular attention to young artists and first solo shows
> All works produced are for sale on our website, giving greater visibility to the island's creative talent.
According to Beaux-Arts Magazine: "one of the few galleries on the island (and the only one!) to champion the young local contemporary scene with such (communicative) energy".
The project
The works we present offer a singular portrait of the island of La Réunion. An island born 3 million years ago from the emergence of an underground volcano, but not inhabited until the 17th century.
The artists reappropriate the island's heritage, reinventing it and embracing a modernity that draws on the territory's living sources:
Juliette Dennemont revisits the work of Antoine Louis Roussin, the famous 19th-century lithographer who immortalized Reunion landscapes. In the same vein, Emma Di Orio reinterprets the island's luxuriant nature through a universe populated by abundant vegetation and strange creatures. Stéphanie Hoareau explores the family stories that keep the island's heart beating. Kid Kréol & Boogie interrogate myths and popular beliefs, while Chloé Robert, true to her ecofeminist vein, questions the place of the living, the body and gesture; and La Troisième Main looks at the way in which man makes his way towards nature and appropriates its territory.
