Presentation of the gallery
Representing some twenty of the most influential Quebec and Canadian artists of their generation, Chiguer art contemporain works to promote Quebec and Canadian art, both nationally and internationally.
By supporting experimentation and research, the gallery highlights sensitive, committed and innovative practices in a wide variety of media.
Founded in Quebec City ten years ago as Galerie 3, the gallery adopted its current identity in 2022 and opened a second space in Montreal, in the Belgo building in the heart of downtown. Now present in both these cultural hubs, it is run by its founder, Abdelilah Chiguer, a figure who has been committed to promoting contemporary Canadian art for over a decade.
Présentation de l'artiste en focus
François Morelli is a key figure in the history of contemporary art in Quebec. His embodied, experimental approach engages the figure and the body, exploring their physical and psychic limits. The body in mutation becomes simultaneously subject, performative instrument and narrative medium.
In her recent works, the artist skilfully blends figuration and abstraction, freehand drawing and mechanical drawing with an ink pad.
A committed artist, he tackles sensitive socio-political issues, bearing witness to the tensions and torments of our times. L'envie de raconter reveals a narrative fresco in which his intimate stories and our collective histories intertwine. From the AIDS crisis to the climate crisis, L'envie de raconter reflects the concerns that have preoccupied the artist over the years.
Following a modernist-inspired logic of collage and assemblage, Morelli's drawings fragment time and space. Disparate styles and narratives are juxtaposed and amalgamated within the same representation, offering the viewer multiple narratives, like portals to other worlds.
