Presentation of the gallery
Directed by Jean-Baptiste Barbier, the galerie Barbier specialises in comic book art. The artists it defends have in common their graphic singularity and their exacting standards, which push them to question the limits of writing in comics, making them major players in the Ninth Art.
Galerie Barbier was founded in 2000 and has 2 exhibition spaces on rue Choron in Paris. It supports major artists, mainly French, such as Christophe Blain, Blutch, Philippe Druillet, Pénélope Bagieu, Enki Bilal and Catherine Meurisse. The gallery also supports young artists by promoting emerging talents.
The gallery produces special editions: catalogs, collections of drawings, special limited editions signed by the artists. Jean-Baptiste Barbier also curates institutional exhibitions such as "Les 6 voyages de Philippe Druillet", presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angoulême in 2023. He is also founder and permanent member of the "Prix Philippe Druillet - galerie Barbier pour la jeune création", which rewards an album published by an author at the start of his or her career.

TOKYO, CUBIST CITY
From mountain landscapes to cityscapes, Nicolas de Crécy is fascinated by the imposing majesty shared by these seemingly opposing worlds. If mountains are places of solitude, Nicolas de Crécy's cities are inhabited by strange, non-human characters who respect neither proportion nor gravity. They are yokai. Time has no hold on them. These mythological figures of ancient Japan, mischievous spirits, still populate the imagination of contemporary Japan, and their longevity in this perpetually evolving society leaves one wondering.
These large-scale works, based on memories and sketches made on site, will be accompanied by drawings taken on the spot, in the notebooks of this traveling artist, immersing visitors in his eye as much as in his imagination.
Nicolas de Crécy will spend a month in the archipelago this autumn to prepare this exhibition.
A book on this theme, Tokyo, ville cubiste, will be published in late 2026 by Editions Barbier.
