The 2016 DRAWING NOW Award
Jochen Gerner is a French artist, born in 1970. He lives and works in Nancy, France. A graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and a member of OuBaPo, he critically analyzes language and images by distorting common visual codes.
Gerner is the author of many books, including Panorama du froid (2013), publ. L’Association; Branchages (2009), publ. L’Association; Against Comic Strip (2008), publ. L’Association; In America (2002), publ. L’Ampoule; Le Minimalisme (2016) with Christian Rosset, publ. Le Lombard; RG (2016) with Emmanuel Rabu, publ. L’Association. Gerner also regularly makes press drawings, including for Le Un, Libération, Le Monde, and The New York Times.
His art has been presented in solo exhibitions at Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy (2015), gallery Anne Barrault (2013), the Museum of Art and History in Bastia (2012), Lux in Valencia (2011), the Centre Pompidou’s children’s gallery in Paris (2010), and the Museum of Modern Art of Luxembourg (2009).
Gerner’s work has also been shown in collective exhibitions, including at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (2015), at the Artothèque in Caen (2014), at Maison Rouge in Paris (2014), and at the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow (2012).
